Originally
used in Shaker communities to store everything from kitchen
herbs to sewing room sundries, Shaker oval boxes find a wide
range of use in today's home or office.
Canadian
craftspeople Peter Griffin and Sherry
Henry build each box by hand using traditional
Shaker designs and techniques. Carefully selected Lanark
County cherry wood is used to make the side, lid and handle
in all models.
The solid
cherry side, with its "swallowtail" fingers, and
the lid band are steam bent, then fastened in place with copper
tacks and tiny wooden pegs. Next, each lid is individually
fitted to its own side and every surface sanded to a satin
smooth finish.
The inside
of each box is left unfinished. (Traditionally, this was
done to prevent mildew by allowing the wood, rather than the
box's contents, to absorb moisture.) The outside is finished
with tung oil and hand rubbed paste wax. As the boxes age,
the colour of the cherry wood will deepen slightly, taking
on richer tones of red and brown.
