Care and Cleaning

About Pewter:

With a little care, your pewter will last and give you pleasure for many years.

Pewter is a soft, non-tarnishing alloy of tin with a small amount of copper and antimony. However, it is a low melting alloy, and should never be put on the stove or in the oven.

Cleaning:

Clean your pewter pieces by washing with a mild soap in warm water and drying at once. DO NOT put pewter in the dishwasher. Occasionally it may be necessary to clean with a good pewter, silver or brass polish.

Candles:

Do not let your candles burn down below the lip of the holder unless it has been specifically designed for this purpose. The product description will let you know if the holder uses a tea light or an actual candle.

Flowers:

Don't be afraid to use pewter jugs and other vessels to hold flowers. However, because the sap from cut flowers may stain the pewter, we suggest you do not put them in an open pewter bowl. Any staining would be more visible.

Food:

Today's pewter contains no lead and can be safely used for food and drink. However, acidic fruit juices or foods may discolour pewter if left for long periods. We simply recommend washing your pewterware reasonably soon after use at a meal - don't leave food overnight. If you'd like to use a pewter dish to store or display whole fruit, just protect the inside of the dish with a sheet of plastic wrap.

To protect the surface of the metal when using a pewter bowl, we suggest you use plastic or wooden serving utensils.
