About
the Artist
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Stanley Lake studied ceramic arts at
Miami and Montclair State Universities, and taught Pottery at
Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
In
1975, Stanley emigrated to Canada and settled in a wonderfully
secluded valley between two mountain ranges in the Eastern
Townships of Quebec where he's been operating his pottery
ever since.
Throughout
that time, he's worked in stoneware and porcelain, with his
garden art evolving over the last eight years or so.
Stanley's
work has a timeless and archetypal quality influenced greatly
by his travels and study of Indian, African, South American
and native American art. The intricate and whimsical detail
of his creations is entrancing. And, there is an aura of joy
about his creations, whether they be art for the garden or
table. In fact, his goddesses are purported to bring a benificent,
fertile and loving spirit to their environment. With a twinkle
in his eye, Stanley cautions that vegetables may grow abundantly
and compost be "so rich it needs to be diluted with sand"
after one of his goddesses has blessed your garden!
Over
the years, Stanley has exhibited his art both nationally and
internationally, and his works are included in private collections
around the world.
.
His Work
Stanley's
garden art and candle holders are crafted from high-fire stoneware
clay and combine wheel thrown elements with hand-built and
carved details. Often, he will use an iron wash glaze to highlight
his intricate designs, giving an earthy metallic look to a
piece.
Every
piece truly is one-of-a-kind. So, before you order, we welcome
your request for photos of currently available work in a series.
