About
the Artist
Janet Holson began her study in ceramic art while attending
high school in Sudbury, Ontario. After completing high school,
she went on to study accounting in Toronto.
However,
she always had the feeling that being a potter was where she
belonged and the need to explore a life of creativity was
of the utmost importance. In 1993, after a ten year absence
from clay, she entered a full-time program in Ceramic Art
and Design at George Brown College.
Janet
currently works out of her own studios in Toronto and Midland.
Her Work
Janet's work is influenced by Japanese
ceramics. Simple yet graceful forms and colours adorn her
chopsticks bowls, dipping dishes, tiles, sake sets, soup and
tea bowls.
She has incorporated a defined spiral in the
base of her thrown wares, a feature that embodies and symbolizes
life's force.
The gracious style of her spirals are images
of Life's energy, always evolving into different forms through
various twists and turns, illustrating that life never ceases
to exist, nor becomes stagnant.
Her functional wares are individually made
for everyday enjoyment, and all glazes are microwave, dishwasher
and food safe.
Artist Statement
The creation process, for me, brings into consciousness
a deep reverence that I have for life.
Working
in clay inspires me to truly acknowledge the depth of
the human spirit and soul. This wondrous material encourages
me to combine art and function as well as search my mind,
body and soul to enable me to express my values and beliefs
as an individual on a conscious level.
Our
external world, in many ways, prevents us from questioning
our everyday surroundings. Our natural environment in
all of its awe and beauty inspires me.
Clay
compels me to fuse both the artificial with the genuine
as a way of enriching my understanding of life in all
of its multi-faceted layers.
